I love Marina’s work with Sophia (and with Helen, too!). They are both very appreciative of how clearly she explains IB Math, and it’s cool to see them feeling encouraged about their ability to tackle it.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The most common score on AP tests is a 3. Meeting this benchmark will show colleges that your student has taken the class seriously and has a solid grasp of the subject matter. More competitive scores, like 4s or 5s, can help balance out weaker areas of a student’s application.

IB scoring is more complicated. Students’ final grades depend both on an internal, teacher-provided score and an external exam score. For highly selective colleges, scores of 6 or above (on a scale of 1 to 7) will likely earn course credit. However, many schools indicate a preference for students who complete the entire IB diploma, which involves performing well in all subjects and meeting additional benchmarks.

In a test-optional or test-blind admissions landscape, AP and IB scores are concrete ways in which your student’s chosen schools can evaluate their academic performance beyond their GPA.

  • Generally, a score of 3 or higher on specific AP exams will earn credit at most public universities; students will need a score of 4 or 5 for credit at a private college or specialty program. The official Advanced Placement’s website, AP Central, gives detailed information on which schools offer credit for each subject area.

IB credit varies widely by school and department, so students should examine the policies for specific schools on the IBO website. (Be aware that IB is rarer than AP by a ratio of 17 to 1.) Colleges’ perceptions of IB Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) vary greatly, and many schools only accept HL credit. Students may also receive course placement versus course credit.

In Washington and Oregon, students are guaranteed course credit for scores of 4 or above for IB, and 3 or above for AP.

  • The AP and IB course designs mean that students are effectively studying all year. (Progress checks, for instance, give AP students a sense of how they’re doing with the material at a given point.) Accordingly, these aren’t tests students can cram for at the last minute – they cover huge amounts of course material as well as critical thinking skills. Students should start preparing seriously for their AP or IB tests at least one month in advance.

  • Sample exams are available in both AP Classroom and the IB website. To gain experience testing under proctored conditions, check out our AP/IB practice test page for upcoming practice AP exam dates.
