 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Both our online and in-person workshops are equally effective in helping students develop excellent personal statements. Deciding which format is best depends on a student’s preferred way to learn. We believe online classes are ideal for digitally-savvy students who prefer flexible schedules, independent writing, and shorter classes (which helps avoid Zoom fatigue), while in-person workshops are best for students who enjoy a traditional learning environment and are available to attend every session.

  • For online workshops, your instructor may be able to record your session for your review with advance notice. For in-person workshops, you’ll receive a slide deck for the missed class and will have the opportunity to discuss what you missed in the free 1:1 tutoring session included in your registration.

  • Each workshop is organized into four general sections: 1) understanding the personal statements you’ll need to write and how they’ll be used in admissions decisions, 2) brainstorming and finding your story, 3) shaping your story into a rough draft, and 4) editing your rough draft until it shines.

Each course includes time for independent work, peer revision, and one-on-one collaboration with your tutor. Because we adapt our courses to each student’s individual needs, every small group class organization will look slightly different. The tutor will provide details on structure at the beginning of the course and will keep students updated if changes arise.

  • Generally we assign around 1-2 hours of homework for each class, although this may vary depending on the needs of each individual student and the speed at which they write. Homework will always include some form of writing, and may also include supplemental readings and short videos to support the writing process.
