SAT Test Sections & Scoring

The SAT consists of two sections: Reading & Writing and Math. The entire exam is delivered via the Bluebook app, and each section comprises two “adaptive” modules. A student’s performance in the first module—a mixture of easy, moderate, and difficult questions—will determine the difficulty of their second module. Not including an optional 10-minute break, the entire exam takes about 2 hours, 15 minutes.

Reading & Writing

  1. Measures students’ reading comprehension, analytical skills, and their knowledge of the rules of punctuation, grammar, and language usage.

  2. Questions are drawn from 11 types of questions, and each question is associated with one short passage.

  3. Each module contains 27 multiple-choice questions to be answered within 32 minutes.

Math

  1. Measures students’ conceptual math knowledge and problem-solving skills.

  2. Content is drawn from Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Data Interpretation, with a heavy emphasis on Algebra.

  3. A calculator is permitted for all questions, and an onscreen Desmos calculator is built into the testing platform.

  4. Each module contains 22 questions to be answered within 35 minutes. Approximately 75% of these are multiple-choice, the remainder being student-entered responses.

Scoring

  1. Reading & Writing modules yield a total section score ranging from 200-800; Math modules are also combined for a total section score ranging from 200-800

  2. Total composite SAT score range of 400-1600

My SAT score went up close to 200 points above my first proctored practice exam, exceeding my goal.
